Whois Lookup

Whois Result

Enter a domain on the left and click Lookup to see ownership, registrar, and registration dates.

What Information Can You Find?

Our WHOIS lookup tool connects directly with central registries to pull real-time domain registration data. Here is what you can discover:

Registrar & Owner Info

Identify which company manages the domain and (if public) who the registered owner or organization is.

Important Domain Dates

Find the original creation date, recent update logs, and exactly when the domain registration expires.

Name Servers & Status

Check the authoritative DNS name servers routing traffic and view registry status codes like clientTransferProhibited.

Common Uses for WHOIS

A Whois lookup is an essential tool for domain investors, IT administrators, and cybersecurity researchers. It acts as the public registry of the internet.

Domain PurchasingFind when a domain expires if you are interested in buying it on the aftermarket.
Brand ProtectionIdentify who registered a typo or trademark-infringing domain variation.
Security AuditsVerify the age and legitimacy of a domain to assess its trustworthiness.

Understanding Data Privacy

Historically, anyone could use a WHOIS lookup to find the name, address, and phone number of a domain owner. However, due to modern privacy regulations:

GDPR Redactions

Personal contact details for registrants in Europe (and often globally) are now heavily redacted. You will often see "REDACTED FOR PRIVACY" instead of an email.

Domain Privacy Protection

Many registrars offer privacy protection services (like Domains By Proxy) which mask the real owner's data with proxy company information.

Decoding Your WHOIS Results

The raw output can look dense at first. Here's what each field actually tells you:

Registrar

The company the domain was registered through (e.g. GoDaddy, Namecheap) — not necessarily the site's host.

Creation Date

When the domain was first registered. Older domains can carry more trust weight for security and SEO purposes.

Expiration Date

The date the registration lapses unless renewed. Past this date the domain can be released and re-registered by anyone.

Updated Date

The last time any record changed — often bumped by routine renewals or nameserver changes, not necessarily ownership changes.

Name Servers

Which DNS provider currently controls the domain's records — useful for confirming a migration actually took effect.

Domain Status

Registry lock codes like clientTransferProhibited (blocks unauthorized transfers) or serverHold (registry-level suspension).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a WHOIS database?
The WHOIS database is a publicly searchable list of every registered domain in the world. ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) requires all accredited registrars to maintain these records.
Why are some domain lookup results empty?
Certain Country Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs) like .ai or .io have very strict registry firewalls or limit WHOIS queries. Additionally, newly registered domains may take 24 hours to appear globally.
How can I contact a domain owner if their email is redacted?
If an email is redacted via privacy proxy, you can usually email the proxy address listed (e.g., domain@domainsbyproxy.com) and the proxy company will forward your message to the real owner. If it's redacted due to GDPR, you may need to visit the registrar's website and use their official contact form.
Is it legal to look up WHOIS information?
Yes. WHOIS data is public by design — ICANN requires registrars to publish it, and querying it is a normal, expected use of the system for site owners, security researchers, and buyers. It's the same data a domain registrar or a command-line `whois` query would return.
What's the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?
RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the newer, structured JSON-based replacement for the old plain-text WHOIS protocol. Many registries have migrated to RDAP behind the scenes, but the data returned — registrar, dates, name servers, status — covers the same information WHOIS always has.

About This Utility

This tool is provided completely free of charge by Mavertex, built and maintained by Kumar, an independent UI developer.

Unlike most of our tools, WHOIS lookups can't run entirely in your browser — the WHOIS protocol isn't reachable from client-side JavaScript, so the domain you enter is sent to our server, which queries the registry on your behalf and returns the result. We don't build a search history tied to you or sell lookup data. For details on our data handling and third-party network usage (including AdSense), please review our Privacy Policy.
