Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is browser-based OCR?
For cleanly printed documents with good lighting, expect accuracy above 95%. Accuracy drops for crumpled or shadowed photos, low-resolution screenshots, and stylized or cursive fonts. A straight-on, well-lit photo of printed text gives the best result.
Does it recognize non-English or non-Latin text?
English and Latin-script languages (with accents and diacritics) work well out of the box. Other scripts like Arabic, Cyrillic, or Devanagari require larger language models — support varies, so test with a sample before relying on it for a full document.
Is my image uploaded for processing?
No. The OCR engine (Tesseract.js) downloads to your browser once and processes the image entirely on your device — nothing is uploaded, which matters when extracting text from ID cards, invoices, or private documents.
Why is the first scan slow?
On first use, the OCR engine and language data download to your browser (several megabytes) and initialize. After that they're cached, and subsequent scans run much faster.
Can it read handwriting?
Not reliably. OCR engines like this one are trained on printed text; neat block handwriting sometimes partially works, but cursive or irregular handwriting will produce mostly errors. For handwriting, a specialized service is a better fit.
