Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Thirukanitha" mean in astrology calculation?

Thirukanitha (drik ganita) means the chart is computed from actual astronomical positions of the planets — modern ephemeris data — rather than the approximations used in older almanac methods. The result is planetary positions that match what a telescope would actually observe.

What is the Lahiri Ayanamsa this tool uses?

Vedic (sidereal) astrology measures positions against the fixed stars, while Western (tropical) astrology measures against the seasons. The Ayanamsa is the offset between the two — currently about 24 degrees — and Lahiri (Chitra Paksha) is the official standard used by the Indian government's calendar committee and most Vedic astrologers.

Why is my birth time so important?

The ascendant (Lagna) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon — changes roughly every two hours, and the entire house structure of the chart hangs off it. An error of even 15–30 minutes can shift your ascendant and meaningfully change the chart, which is why precise birth time matters more than anything else you enter.

What's the difference between my Rasi and my Sun sign?

Your Rasi is the sign the Moon occupied at your birth — that's what Vedic astrology primarily uses. The "star sign" from newspaper horoscopes is your tropical Sun sign. Because of the ayanamsa offset and the Moon vs Sun difference, the two are usually different signs.

Is my birth data stored?

Your birth date, time, and location are sent to our server to compute the chart (with planetary data from the Prokerala astrology API when available), but we don't store them, tie them to your identity, or build any profile from them.

About This Utility

This tool is provided completely free of charge by Mavertex, built and maintained by Kumar, an independent UI developer.

Chart calculation requires more than a browser can do alone: the birth date, time, and coordinates you enter are sent to our server, which calculates your chart locally where possible and falls back to the Prokerala astrology API for planetary data. We don't tie these lookups to your identity or build a profile from them. For details on our data handling and third-party network usage (including AdSense), please review our Privacy Policy.
